The One Thing This Founder Wants Powerful Women To Stop Doing

In the episode of Woman This week I sat down with series entrepreneur Amy Errett, the founder of the exploding omnichannel hair dye company Madison Reed.

Errett has more than 30 years of business and operational expertise as a four-time entrepreneur and venture capitalist. Prior to founding Madison Reed, Errett served as a general partner at Maveron, a leading venture capital firm co-founded by former Starbucks CEO Howard Schultz. Errett was also on Fast Company’s first-ever Queer 50 list of LGBTQ women and non-binary innovators in business and tech in 2020.

As always in our Woman interviews, I’m most interested in discovering the woman behind the company and her secrets to success. Madison Reed expanded from 12 barber bars in March 2020 to more than 50 locations by 2022.

During our conversation, I asked Errett how running her fourth company was different from building her first — and specifically how she’s changed. Her answer reminded me of a golden rule in entrepreneurship: building a business requires building a self. Amy’s vision of Madison Reed’s scaling is rooted in mission and purpose as its foundation.
