A new report from analyzes the key trends and challenges developers experience every day. As we continue to see the cloud and observation sectors mature, the complexity of environments and the speed of incident response remain major challenges.

One of the most interesting, yet disturbing, findings of the survey is that 64% of respondents report more than an hour of average recovery time (MTTR), compared to 47% in last year’s report. What’s more, 53.4% of people surveyed last year claimed to have solved manufacturing issues within an hour on average – this year, that number dropped to 35.94%.

Another data point from the report reveals that application and data security are at the forefront of devops teams’ priorities. With 33% as fourth overall concern among respondents, data security was identified as one of the top observability challenges in the survey. From expanding their role in security based on an increasing emphasis on the cloud, to managing a variety of tools, devops teams are increasingly concerned with security issues.

While most devops practitioners today report that their cloud and observation efforts are rapidly maturing, the challenges surrounding complex microservices monitoring and efforts to accelerate incident response remain significant hurdles. According to the research, observation tools and practices continue to escalate as challenges arise, such as monitor tracking, developing visibility in Kubernetes, microservices, serverless and cloud-native architectures.

By accurately tracking and analyzing the data critical to key observation requirements and reducing the MTTR despite identified challenges, organizations can better calculate associated spend and ROI. Emphasizing these factors, combined with a greater focus on application and data security, will help solve the challenges identified by devops teams and observers.

The report shows that there is too much data and that the current model for observability is being broken. Organizations are increasingly concerned about the impact of data volumes on production quality and costs. This report provides an analysis of the changing landscape and calls on organizations to think carefully about the impact of Kubernetes and microservices and to continuously evaluate the value and hygiene of telemetry data.
