Apple display supplier could miss out on major iPhone 14 order after reportedly caught cutting corners

Chinese display manufacturer Beijing Oriental Electronics (BOE) is said to be missing out on 30 million display orders for the upcoming iPhone 14 after it reportedly changed the display design of the iPhone 13 to increase revenue, or produce non-defective products, according to a report of the Elec (through 9to5Mac

Apple Taxes BOE making iPhone 13 screens last October, a short-lived deal that ended earlier this month when Apple reportedly caught BOE cutting corners on its screens. Sources close to the situation told the Elec that BOE allegedly changed the circuit width of the iPhone 13’s thin-film transistors without Apple’s knowledge. However, this decision could haunt BOE as Apple may also strip the company of the task of making the OLED screen for the iPhone 14. According to the ElecBOE sent an executive to Apple’s headquarters in Cupertino to explain the incident, saying it has not received an order to make iPhone 14 screens. Apple is expected to announce the iPhone 14 at an event this fall, but the Elec says production for its display could begin next month.

instead of BOO, the Elec expects Apple to split the order of 30 million displays between LG Display and Samsung Display, the two main display vendors. Samsung will probably produce the 6.1 and 6.7-inch screens for the upcoming iPhone 14 Pro, while LG will make the 6.7-inch screen for the iPhone 14 Pro Max.

According to MacRumorsBOE previously only made screens for refurbished iPhones. Apple later hired the company to provide OLED screens for the new iPhone 12 in 2020, but the first batch of panels failed Apple’s rigorous quality control tests. Since the beginning from this year, The output of BOE is also affected due to a shortage of display driver chips.
